Animation Collaborative - Advanced Animation And Intensive Lecture

AnimC Site YEAH!!!

I just finished up both Victor Navone's Advanced Animation Workshop and Michael Makarewicz Intensive Workshop.  Victor's critiques were great and my fellow classmates work was very inspiring.  It was great to get face-to-face crits from one of the best in the biz.  As for Michaels workshop - It was one of the most eye opening- holy shit!!! workshops I have taken.  His workflow can really make anyone in animation better.  I learned a crap load in that class.  If you are able I would say you owe it to yourself to get enrolled with AnimC.  My experience there was amazing.

Finished up my CG Workshop on Comping in Nuke

This was a great course.  This will get anybody not familiar with Nuke on the ball with having to comp their own work in Nuke.  I definitely recommend it if you're thinking about producing your own short - or any personal piece needing the magic of Nuke.  I come from a motion graphic background so some of the techniques are similar to After Effects BUT for comping Nuke just absolutely kills AE.  It's both a precise surgical tool and an all out arse-kicking, take no names piece of software.

Story- The action and time needed to succeed

Paraphrasing here and putting into an animator's lexicon.  Time well spent is spent on story.  Don't be afraid to kill your babies - "by killing you will make something better live".  Abandon crap and be ruthless.  Have the idea that you need to enforce every storytelling part of your shot by clearly executing your beats/phrases.  Don't let failure paralyze your work.  But allow yourself to create enough work by having a schedule of what gets done no matter what and through this you will create that 1 piece that excites you and makes those previous shots worth the time.  Know that before the special shots come there will be a lot of crap to sift through - a lot of trying stuff out if you will.  You didn't become an animator that wants to create mediocre stuff - you want to create something memorable, something special

Just a thought

I just read a great article in 3D magazine about VFX legend Phil Tippet.  The one thing that resonated with me the most is the advice he gave about finding balance.  As animators we are constantly judging our work.  Becoming as he described"hyper-focused" on what's 'wrong' with our work, and that's the death of an artist.  Instead take a look at it from the perspective of what can make it better.

Awesome Animator - Alvise Avati

How to be a happy animator.  Really great advice and info by a really great animator.  I like his straight to the point delivery - no bull and great story on how to continue to grow and be excited about animation.

Fight or Flight - good read on what's happening internally and externally

Click here to go to an interesting read on the physiological reaction that occurs in response to a perceived harmful event, attack, or threat to survival. My mentor at AC, Victor Nevone, recently mentioned parasympathetic response while in the middle of my critique. He went on to describe the pose associated with this response and it made sense in context. But I had no idea what the word meant in association with fight or flight. Anywho, its great insight on using this physical reaction in animation. The first part is a bit tedious so you might just want to skip down to where the examples begin - it gets interesting.

I'm Back - What better way to start then to Glen Keane's - Duet
